What are terpenes?

Terpenes are natural compounds that are found in many plant species, not just the cannabis plant. Thousands of types of terpenes have been discovered across various species of plant. They are typically the compounds that give the plant or herb its signature aroma.

This can have beneficial effects in nature, such as producing a pleasant smell to attract pollinators or an unpleasant smell to ward off predators. Some terpenes have other roles, too, such as contributing to the plant’s immune system and protecting it from damage or helping it to recover from damage.

The role of terpenes in CBD oil

The cannabis plant contains high concentrations of terpenes. In fact, more than 100 different terpenes have been discovered in the plant, with some claims stating that it’s actually more than 200. Once the plant has been dried and cured for use, these terpenes convert into terpenoids due to oxidization. Terpenes can also be isolated and added to things like shampoo or bubble bath (or CBD oil) to add the smell of lavender or mint to your bath, for example.

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains terpenoids whereas CBD isolate will not. Terpenes may be added to CBD isolate, however, although this may be less effective than natural full-spectrum CBD oil due to the increase in processing.

So, what do terpenes do in CBD oil? Like cannabidiol, terpenes and terpenoids do not have any intoxicating effects. Terpenes are thought to enhance the existing effects of CBD and other cannabinoids, contributing to the so-called entourage effect. They are thought to aid in relieving stress and anxiety, reducing inflammation, and regulating emotions.

While there isn’t a comprehensive list of the terpenes that occur in the cannabis plant, here are some of the terpenes and terpenoids that might commonly be found in full-spectrum CBD oil:
